WHAT IS YOUR DREAM CHECK?

Jim Carrey famously wrote himself a check for $10 Million Dollars and put in the notation line, “for acting services rendered.”

Carrey wrote this check in 1990, and dated it five years out to Thanksgiving 1995.

In 1995, Jim Carrey was paid $10 million just before Thanksgiving for the movie Dumb and Dumber.

Oh, the irony of the name of that film staring one of the most brilliant comic minds of a generation.

Carrey literally wrote himself his Dream Check.

This psychological action of self determination can and should be carried out by all of us.

What is your Dream Check?

For those unmotivated by money, but more so by an objective, what is your Dream Achievement?

I finished reading 10x is Easier Than 2x this week, and it is in this book where the authors retold this story of Jim Carrey and how Carrey ultimately optimized his Unique Ability of comedy, combined with focus, and going all in, to eventually lead him to his Dream Check.

Your Dream Check is defined as a massive, even absurd amount of money to be paid for something that would ultimately involve an extreme transformation of yourself.

Change doesn’t occur without change.

So, if you changed, and transformed yourself into a person of value so large that someone or some people would provide you with your Dream Check, what would that look like?

2 Questions the authors suggests you ask yourself:

  1. What specific value would I need to provide such that my Dream Check would be a no-brainer and extreme bargain for the person who would happily pay me?

  2. What would need to be true of my Unique Ability to be valuable enough that someone would see it as a no-brainer and extreme bargain to write and pay me my Dream Check?

Who would you have to become in order to earn your Dream Check?

Dream big, but within the realm of possibility. In other words, the authors of 10x Is Easier Than 2x suggest a ballpark 10x amount of what you’ve been paid to this point as a salary or for a project.

If I made $80,000 in one month, that would be 10x the amount I’ve ever made within a 30 day period.

So, $80K a month is my current Dream Check.

There’s a reason I’ve never made $80K in a month. I haven’t provided enough value to the right person or people to elicit that type of payout.

“Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value.”

—Albert Einstein

Defining who you want to be a hero to enables you to determine your focus. Your top priority.

Carrey wanted to be a hero to his fans, but more importantly to the Hollywood producers who he exchanged his comedic value for monetary gain.

Giving Carrey $10 million at the time was a no-brainer for Hollywood producers who knew they would make their investment back and then some.

Ask yourself, what specialized skills and abilities and results you want to create and develop in order to earn your Dream Check.

Who do you want to be a hero to in exchange for monetary gain?

In other words, not a hero, like being a good parent, or rescuing someone from danger, but a hero in the sense that someone or a group of someones values what you have to offer so much so, that they are willing to provide you with your Dream Check.
