Artists, adventurers, entrepreneurs all have a soft spot for admiration in my heart. Probably because they are different. They manage “risk” in their favor. They are often considered outcasts. They form their own tribes. I love all of that!

But why is living life like an artist important?

Rick Ruben breaks it down in his book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being.

Ruben co-founded Def Jam Recordings, founded American Recordings, and is the former co-president of Columbia Records.

You may be familiar with such artists as The Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, AC/DC, Aerosmith, The Avett Brothers, and Kid Rock. Yes, Ruben has produced records for all those artists and many more!

Ruben is trending lately in podcast land because he offers sage wisdom while typically sitting with legs crossed in a plain white tee, shorts, and wildly long uncouth hair. In his just-rolled-outta-bed fashion, Ruben then drops philosophic bombs to his listeners.

isn’t the same person
who returns to the work tomorrow.

Instead of sounding like others, value your own voice. Develop it. Cherish it.

Impatience is an argument with reality.

The goal of art isn’t to attain perfection. The goal is to share who we are. And how we see the world.

Being an artist
means to be continually asking,
“How can it be better?”
whatever it is.
It may be your art,
and it may be your life.

How shall we measure success?
It isn’t popularity, money, or critical esteem. Success occurs in the privacy of the soul. It comes in the moment you decide to release the work, before exposure to a single opinion.

Success has nothing to do with variables outside yourself.

All art is a form of poetry. It’s always changing, never fixed.
